Services Provided – Design, Planning, Building Regulations
Bodmin Dental Surgery is situated in the centre of Bodmin town, and is housed in a small town house with three medical rooms. The owner recruited A & K Architectural Services to design plans for an extension that would significantly increase the number of patients that can attend consultations.
The brief was to add three treatment rooms, a kitchen, a disabled toilet, a store room and a new reception. X ray machines were to be installed in two of the treatment rooms and the services were upgraded to support this requirement. The local planning team required the extension to blend in with its surroundings and not be more than two storeys high.
The solution was to build a three storey extension but to sink a third level into the ground meeting the clients requirements and the planning teams guidance. Suitable and practical plans were drawn with a design that would complement the original building. Finishes were specified to be in keeping with the town house but with the use of modern materials to reduce maintenance and energy bills after consultation with Cornwall planning team and planning permission was granted. The design has given the property a three story extension consisting of a ground floor, first floor and a loft.
The ground floor includes a toilet, kitchen and large treatment room, the second floor houses another surgical room along with a good size store for medical supplies. The loft space houses a final treatment room. This room is enlarged with a dormer built into the roof of the property.
The extension turned an otherwise unused space at the back of the house into a pleasant and productive part of the dental surgery, benefiting the local community and providing additional employment.
